scenes from a dream

Scene 1 : A frantic search for the cellphone ringing somewhere in the basement of an old hospital — seven levels deep, led by a rickety spiraling staircase. Dark corridors: labyrinths of death, decay, and Iodoform. Distant cries of inmates echoing across hallways bouncing off of grimy walls.

Scene 2: Rusty old cars parked under coconut trees; feral dogs sleeping in the backseat and underneath trying to escape the relentless summer heat; fish heads and discarded entrails pregnant with squirming maggots; maddening hum of blowfly swarms; narrow pathways escaping into backyards full of rotting timber and scrap metal; children bent over ant-nests pouring hot water into cavernous depths; an explosion of fire ants — a soggy mess of tangled legs and broken antennae.

Scene 3: Emerging from the hospital depths. There it is! The warm golden light. Every blade of grass, every flower, and the distant hill bathed in the gold of the evening sun. And there she is! Like a rare blue bird that just landed in a forest clearing. Part of the scenery and yet so alien. Her laughter, like the birdsong, is an invitation to the secrets of the land. Am I to be her accomplice? What a privilege!
